Pensive Brown Fish Owl (Bubo zeylonensis)

Someone told me couple of years ago that owls can easily become an obsession. These days I fear, I may be getting there. I have chased this species of owl across hundreds of kilometers without landing up with a photo that would be worth posting.

So when I visited Bandipur Tiger Reserve, early October this year, I was excited by the stories of regular sighting of this bird during most of the safaris. I had planned three safaris this time around and the first two drew a blank. Travelers in different vehicles continued to regularly report sightings much to my chagrin. I did not have much hope from the third and final safari as the sky was overcast and it was drizzling lightly. As the ride progressed, the drizzle became heavier and when all seemed lost that’s when I spotted this owl. Its camouflage was near perfect but its eyes were the giveaway.

Owls have a melancholic look about them and a wet forehead seems to accentuate that look for this one. The bird was actually quite close but the light was bad. So my wait for that elusive perfect shot of the owl would continue
