Hoopoe (Upupa epops)

This colourful bird is found throughout India and derives its name from its distinctive call. I clicked this photo at BR Hills.

  1. Very interesting looking bird. I have never seen anything quite like like this here in the U.S.
Looks a little like a cross between a woodpecker and a hummingbird.;)

    • Yes it does look like a woodpecker but is related to Bee-eaters, Woodpeckers and Rollers. Infact it’s the only extant species of the Upupidae family. The Hoopoe is widespread in Europe, Asia, and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar. And it is quite comfortable living near farmlands and hence is not an uncommon sight in India. It is also the national bird of Israel and the state bird for the Indian state of Punjab.
